A lot of people will get chronic joint pain sometimes in their life, whether in the shoulder, knees, elbows, back, wrists or ankles.
It’s quite easy for this to happen, as many activities can lead to overuse, like swimming, bowling, golfing, skiing. It can slowly cause pain over time, which becomes a chronic affliction and it makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.
Or it can make the joint weak enough that simply overextending it, or working hard on a project at home will cause great pain that will stay. That can happen due to overuse that didn't feel like it was too much.
This pain will stay for a long time. Sometimes going away only to come back after a little while.
It may seem like it’s not a big deal, but it actually means that something hasn't been right in the joint. The longer it goes the more tension it will create, the supporting joints and muscles around it will become weaker, and the pain will become chronic and may get worse over time.
It is at this point that the pain will start to impair everyday life. It makes work tougher, it becomes unpredictable. Any work or physical chores can create extra tension or give surprise extra pain. Often with time it can make you stop doing physical chores altogether.
The usual help given by conventional medicine is painkillers, maybe with some exercises. Painkillers will probably help the pain but they likely will be needed for a very long time.. And if things don’t work by themselves, it might be off to surgery. Even with experts in athlete surgeons, about 20% of them will still be in pain after the operation.
People with chronic joint pain often get very frustrated as there’s a lot of tension and difficulty in doing what used to be very simple. They might deal with :
Hurt pride and anxiety. There is often a feeling of losing oneself when people can’t do what they do routinely.

Chronic pain always comes from something, there's a cause. For example there is often a good amount of overuse through different activities and sports. That will cause tension, which in turn prevents relaxation and cause weakening of the muscles. A weaker muscle can not protect the joint it is attached to.
There is often a shock that happened earlier in life. A simple “slip on ice” can overextend your joint and leave it weaker and more prone for problems to arise later.
Bad digestion can results in more injuries due to weakening of the body or chronic inflammation due to diet or bad digestion. Food and liquid nourish the body, keep it supple and strong. When that strength is not renewed due to a digestion that doesn’t work as well as it should, it saps the strength from the least vital parts of the body, the muscles and joints, to give it to the internal organs. This weakening slowly starts to crumble the structure of the body and give a difficult time when working those elbows.

Barely a couple of years ago I heard a doctor saying to a lung cancer patient that he didn't need to stop smoking, it didn't matter. Who could put his trust in that ? That is someone who doesn't consider the way we live in regards to our illnesses and our healing.
Doctors sometimes feel the need to bring down any “high blood pressure” they see, sometimes without considering why the blood pressure is high : it is to bring the blood where it needs to be, to nourish the body. And if there is a problem with the blood pressure, there are many solutions which should be used according to the cause of the high blood pressure. It's not usually the case.
The body doesn't lack a drug, it is not the cause of high blood pressure, so to simply give a drug for the rest of one’s life isn't exactly what is going to cure the problem or prevent the dreaded heart problems to stop from happening.
Medicine sometimes is stuck, like for a surgery like putting in a stent, which is basically putting a tube in an artery. It can be helpful, but the problem and the cause for the weak artery isn't usually the artery itself. So to try to deal with the artery only can be a big mistake.

And it keeps opening up to more true and very real effect, such as the importance of the power of the mind in the healing process. The mind will greatly affect the body, and the body itself will create emotions or influence the personality. So medicine is starting to be more subtle and precise in the way it works so that we can better go towards balance and health.

In Chinese Medicine and in Acupuncture we need to consider everything in the body so that we can see where the problem comes from. There will be many factors, sometimes many triggers. Those medicines are more and more present is an answer to a need for a greater understanding and a more appropriate approach to health.
Medicine knows that health is balance, and that keeping this balance is a dynamic non stop progress. It’s not a goal but something to work on every day. Cells never stops working, the heart doesn't stop beating, the system always digest, repairs and re balance. So why shouldn't we ?
